There are three main components of your child's nightly homework: 1. Reading- Required 2. Word Study-Recommended 3. Math- Recommended
Other homework may occur periodically. Completed homework assignments should be recorded in your child's agenda and signed by an adult nightly.
1. Reading: Students should read a minimum of 20 minutesper night. This can be to you, with you, and sometimes by you. Before reading, try having your child make predictions about the story. While reading, you can discuss the characters, setting, problems, and solution of the story. After reading, ask your child to retell the main idea and key details of the story (for non-fiction: retell the topic and details). Try utilizing Post-It notes within the books as well. Writing responses to questions is a GREAT skill to practice as well. This is what will really help your child move up to their next reading level! Check out the Reading Comprehension Discussion Questions below! Time spent on Raz-Kids may count toward this 20 minutes as well. Please log nightly reading in the agenda.
2. Word Study: Your child will be bringing home a collection of spelling words every other week that have been introduced in class. Your child is expected to do 3 different activities throughout the week to ensure that these words and the spelling principles they represent are mastered. Choose 3 activities from the Spelling Homework Ideas page (located in the B.E.E. Folder and by clicking the button below) to complete during the week. Record and sign the activities in the agenda upon completion. Any written assignments should be completed in the Word Study Notebook.
3. Math: Approximately 10-15 minutes of math practice should be completed each night. Students may work on Tenmarks, Dreambox, Sunshine Math, Dealing with Math Card Games, or practice a timed test. Tenmarks and Dreambox login information can be found in your child's B.E.E. Folder and the links are found under the "Web Links" tab. Sunshine Math is found below. Timed tests are found under the "Timed Math Tests" tab.
